Managing agents will recruit and develop their staff. For those embarking on a career in underwriting, this will often be based on some form of apprenticeship: learning from more senior professionals at the underwriting box in Lloyd's.

All underwriting and claims experts should seek to become professionally qualified and achieve chartered status. The recognised insurance qualification is the Advanced Diploma of the Chartered Insurance Institute – ACII. The first examination for those seeking this qualification at Lloyd's is the LLMIT – Lloyd's & London Market Introductory Test – or ALMI – the Award in London Market Insurance.

The LMA Lloyd's Market Academy will support the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) by providing specialist ACII subjects for the Lloyd's Market, as well as a range of programs designed to develop competencies and provide practical experiential learning.

Once qualified, professionals at Lloyd's will embark upon Continuing Professional Development (CPD) – learning at every stage of their careers to enable them to maximise commercial opportunities and operate at optimal levels. The CII, LMA Lloyd's Market Academy and other trainers, educators, including business schools, and professional bodies will be involved in this structured process.
